What’d you think?: 1999 was the year Tony Hawk landed the first in-competition 900, at X-Games V. Action sports were a huge deal in the late ’90s, and there was a glut of video games about them, particularly compared to now, when there might be one or two major releases a year. A few of these games were quite good; most were not. This one sadly falls into the latter category, lazily coloring in the paint-by-numbers template of “press a button to jump then another button to do a trick”, without adding any of the interesting flourishes of similar games. On the bright side, even the worst games of the genre often had pretty interesting soundtracks, and perhaps due to the MTV licensing, there’s a lot to like for fans of 90s Epitaph punk in the vein of Lagwagon and Ten Foot Pole.
