What’d you think?: All golf games are basically the same. You choose a direction you’d like to hit the ball in. The distance and arc it’s supposed to travel are determined by which club you’re using, the wind, and possibly your golfer’s personal attributes. Sometimes you can add spin to the ball to adjust its arc or how it will roll after landing. Whether or not the ball follows this arc depends on a meter that will swing out once to determine power — hit it at an indicated mark to go all the way to where the preview suggested it might, or less if that’s too far — then again to determine accuracy, too soon or too late and you’ll hook or slice it. This game was heavy on the options for presentation, with a lot of camera angles to choose from. However, I was very bad at working the meter in this game, and I wasn’t very fond of how it looked, despite the myriad angles from which I was able to look at it. I began my first tournament with a -28 handicap, which I found insulting, until I found myself at +4 by hole 12 and retired early. A pox on VR Golf ’97, and a European pox on its PAL release, Actua Golf.
